I'm going to play a pixie character in my next 4e session, and having never had a session with a pixie in it, I am kinda stumped on building a sound background story and designing a believable character. What are some resources/stories/explanations about pixies and how they fit into the world of 4e? I know the basics, so the Player Handbook doesn't cut it for me.

I would really like to have a deeper insight. If you have stories about your own pixie characters, you're more than welcome to share them, too!. Pixies fit into the DM's setting however you and they want.My suggestion would be to think about your world, and think about pixies. They're small, but they defend themselves with powerful magic. What caused them to develop that sort of magic? Were they killed by evil forces?

Did they develop it naturally, an extension of they Feywild? How has that affected them and their relationship with the 'larger' races? Are their concerns taken seriously? Do they take the large races seriously, or do they view them as large, comical oafs?Create a pixie society that you find robust and believable. Many of their concerns are met with magic. This frees them from the need to gather that most 'big people' societies have (food, resources, etc.). Shelter is easy for them.

They can be almost tribal, but they wander off on their own. Do they even have a society, or do they form small, constantly shifting bands based on their whim and how social they're feeling? Maybe joining a band of 'big people' starts as an amusing way to pass the time, something different from joining a pixie band (later your character can have deeper ties to the party, more emotional ones).4E deliberately has a less constrained world than previous editions of D&D. You're not going to find the answers in a book. My obligatory response every time someone mentions pixie characters.Make yours whatever you want.

Dnd 4e Handbook

My group had a pixie rogue. It was the first time we'd had one in the campaign, and they were going through a trap heavy section, trying to snag an artifact from a vault. I'd been very specific with the traps, pressure plates on the floor, tripwires, etc. Absolutely NOT ready for a flying thief. After that, the pixie character got a bit of an attitude, and rightly so, about how human traps were so cute and non-threatening.

It added a new touch to their character's personality. If you want it to fit in with more official setting material, I'd check out anything Feywild related. has a pixie adventure included. It has some pixie related fluff, like:d10 Pixie Superstition.1 Never pass a mushroom ring without stopping to.dance a jig inside it.2 Eat honey when you can.3 Don’t go down steps by starlight.4 Every third answer given to a human must be alie.5 When in doubt, sing and shout.6 Never hide inside the hollow of a dead tree.7 It is bad luck to follow a human inside a house.8 Never fly over flames.9 Always knock before entering somebody else’shome.10 Never say “no” to a grasshopper.I think some of the other terms to look for are to do with the seasons, summer court, winter fey, etc. I always look at the Feywild as the place the regular world gets it's fairy tales from. If you have the Feywild handbook, there are some little stories spread through it in green sidebars, giving pixie fairy tales and behaviour. There was one about them turning a child into a cat so it could play, but then the kid got mean and chased the pixies, so they left it as a cat.kinda dark when you think about it, lol.One of the hellboy movies, and one called Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, had horrifying little tooth fairy type creatures. Tricking people, killing them, eating their bones.

There's always the Pan/Tinkerbell option as well.I always get stuck on the idea of a pixie warlord, hiding in someone's pocket, calling out orders and granting them extra attacks and bonuses. Maybe they are messing with them, but pretending to be their conscience, or maybe they do the same to the enemies, sneaking onto them and trying to mess them up. I played a fire elementalist pixie in a recent campaign and loved her. The only reason I gave her up was because I got bored with the elementalist powers but the pixie part was awesome. They can present some difficulties however, especially if your GM isn't familiar with pixies and/or not willing to learn more about them.

Fortunately for me I have a great GM and he really goes the extra mile when it comes to research. I think the main thing about playing a pixie is that you and your GM have to be flexible. There's nothing wrong with adding a few house rules to make play more enjoyable but you also can't exploit things, like flying and your size for example. Make it a pixie but make it something that works for the rest of your team. Our campaign was very small, there were only three of us including the GM. My pixie, Mischief, was teamed up with a Goliath Barbarian and the contrast between the two made for a lot of laughs and good times.

In legend, pixies come into the world every time a child is born so I didn't give Mischief a family. Instead she traveled with the circus (all non-pixies) and they were her family before she decided to set out on her own where she met the barbarian. She basically didn't know where she came from because she just happened. Pixies are very childlike because of where they come from so it can be fun to give them a bit of childish personality as long as you don't become TOO annoying.

Mischief was known for her constant talking and childlike mannerisms but it really endeared her to people. You'll have a hard time finding a good resource for pixies in regards to D&D so what I did was just research pixies in other lore. They can be tricksters, playful, mischievous, curious, thieves, maybe even a pixie prince would be fun.

They can communicate with beasts and have an affinity for nature. Being a ritual caster goes nice with pixies because that allows you to use spells to provide you with things that others usually carry like food and shelter. We house ruled that gold just automatically became small to fit in my pocket. Otherwise you can get so caught up in what would 'realistically' happen. Bottom line.pixies are awesome so make it fun and full of laughs. Here's a link to Mischief's bio in case you're interested.
